About Dr BARRETT

My Background and Expertise

I am a Registered Psychologist registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists, the Psychologists' Association of Alberta, and a member of the Canadian Psychological Association. I hold a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Alberta and bring over 20 years of experience specializing in supporting autistic, neurodiverse, and non-autistic children, adolescents, adults, and their families.

My training and work experience spans a variety of treatment settings, including private practices, community mental health centers, and non-profit organizations. This diverse background has given me a unique perspective on how to provide effective support across different environments and situations.

MY APPROACH

HOW I WORK WITH CLIENTS

My approach to therapy is built on the understanding that neurodivergent individuals experience the world in unique and valuable ways. I believe in creating a therapeutic relationship based on:

  • Genuine respect for your lived experience and perspective
  • Collaborative problem-solving that honors your autonomy
  • Practical strategies that work in real-world situations
  • Flexibility to adapt as your needs and goals evolve

I integrate evidence-based approaches including Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based techniques, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), always tailoring these approaches to your individual needs.

Areas of Expertise

Specialized Experience

My specialized experience includes:

  • Supporting autistic and neurodivergent youth and young adults
  • Guiding successful transitions to adulthood and independence
  • Helping individuals develop social and communication skills
  • Managing anxiety, stress, and sensory challenges
  • Building executive functioning skills
